O-Ring Designs in Hydraulic Applications
The sealing requirements for hydraulic equipment may be static, reciprocating, rotary, oscillating and so on.
Static Sealing Applications are used where movements of mating components relative to each other is not expected. Typically, static seals are found below the head of bolts or rivets, in connections for piping or related applications. The static nature of such seals still has to allow for minor expansion due to heat, or movements due to vibration.
Reciprocating Seals are designed to allow for movement of mating parts along the axis of the shaft in a hydraulic cylinder. The reciprocating movement causes the hydraulic o-ring or seal to roll or slide back and forth. A common use of the reciprocating seal would be found in the hydraulic piston.
The inner and outer components of the seal assembly in oscillating seals moves a manner of an arc around the axis of the shaft. In the process, the components relative to the hydraulic o-ring or seal is typically rotated. In the case where movement of the arc is greater than 360 degrees (example: Repeated turning of the handle of valves during operation), the oscillating seal differs from the rotary seal by way of the opposite direction of the returning arc. In faucet valve stems, the oscillating seals can be found in the form of an o-ring seal.
A single-directional turning around the axis of the shaft by either the inner member, or the outer member of the sealing component distinguishes the rotary seal. In this application, turning is reversible but is distinguished from the oscillating seal in that the start and stop phase upon short arc movements is not allowed for.
